10k visitors in first 6 weeks, but where do I go from here?

Posted by Jeremy G. on 29th, 2008

I sent this message to a Stumbleupon friend.

“It’s my baby :) Been up for about 6 weeks I think, and doing well so far, but I’m still trying to find my groove. I want to target a niche, but just not sure which one to go after. I guess Hawaii related stuff would be the obvious choice, but I’m just not sure I could make interesting posts day in and day out with just Hawaii posts. Any suggestions? :P”

I guess it really wraps up how I feel about this site right now.  Anyone have suggestions on how to find a niche to target?

Hm, good question. I guess you’re at a crossroads, so to speak. Since this is your blog, you have to write about stuff that is interesting to you, so that the ideas keep flowing.

So the writing can either be about you, or the environment you’re in (Hawaii), or some combination of both. Like you said, you can only write so many things about Hawaii.

If you think about it, you have one of those personalities that people are drawn to, like a social magnet. People like you because you are fun, you get people to come together, and funny things seem to happen when you’re around.

If you can inject those attributes into your writing, and write about some fun things that you and your friends end up doing, with Hawaii as a context but not necessarily the prime focus, I think that could be a winner.

    my $.02 :)

Oh, and just so you know, I think it’s cool what you’re doing, and it’s almost inspiring me to get off my lazy ass and do something similar. ;)

After thinking about this for a while, I came to pretty much the same conclusion. Focus on my experiences + a Hawaiian twist.

Just Hawaii topics would bore me I think, but just my “diary” or whatever would make people think, “Wtf does this have to do with ‘The Hawaiian Life?’ Somewhere in the middle is the obvious answer.

Well, I’m planning a overview of the hot nightlife spots in Waikiki, plus some more bitching about my job =( I’m almost quit on the spot twice in the last week and a half. Good sign that it’s time to move on? Definitely.

Based on our meeting last week, I’d say you seem a very logical, “things should make sense” type of person. I can see value in identifying things that don’t, sort of like a Hawaiian version of Dilbert. For example, last week I was on the beach in Waikiki. Near the Outriffer Reef, there was a dreadlocked dude with a bunch of leis. He saw some tourists and placed a lei over each person’s head. Nice islander benevolence, right? Wrong. He started pointing out how a donation (that was more than the people would have been willing to pay for the leis) would benefit some or other appropriately altruist-themed beneficiary. That of course soured the experience for the tourists. Better if he’d just sold the leis, openly and honestly, rather than trying the scam angle. I know of several other eamples. Informing pleasant bu clueless mainlanders of such things would be of value to them, and would serve your quest for rewarding those who make sense and punishing those to don’t.

Sorry for the typos. Outriffer, etc. D-uh.

You could focus this blog on your life and just grow from there. There are a lot of personal blogs that are just HUGE, but it takes a bit of work and marketing.
