Damn centipedes in Hawaii!
I live in an old bug infested neighborhood
Cockroaches, geckos, lizards, and all other kinds of critters are standard fare. Nothing bothered me and I thought the hawaiian bugs weren’t so bad. And then I saw my first Hawaiian centipede. I’ve never seen one in my life before today, and god DAMN are they some freaky little bastards. They are fast as a pissed off snake, with a venemous bite to match. Here is the picture that proves that they will indeed die after swimming in Raid for 10 minutes.
Look how big this thing was!
I’ve been pretty unhappy with my house for a while, and this is the last straw, I can’t wait to get the hell out of here.
Now every time I step outside, or crawl into bed in the pitch dark, I’m going to be thinking that this centipedes family is waiting for me there, ready to avenge his death! Thankfully I’m soon moving to a new place down in Waikiki, and it’s on the 24th floor. Try to climb up 24 stories… yeah, that’s what I thought, YOU CAN’T (I hope).

Yeah that centipede would scare the shit out of me. Nasty looking!

I’m scared of the baby ones too because you might not even see them. They’re like little threads. I have this phobia of walking in my kitchen at night and stepping on one as I turn on the light.

@ Fuckingaround.info : I hear ya, they are pretty horrible, but from what I’ve seen, they are fairly uncommon (I’ve seen only two in exactly one year here.) That shouldn’t be enough to keep you from visiting the islands, Hawaii is an awesome place.

Hah what the hell ever I want the hell off this island! I sprayed my yard today to get rid of bugs and 7, 3 to 8 inch centipedes came crawling out of my under my under my patio before I freaked out and ran inside. I have no idea how many more came out after I left to get my husband, but when I came back there was one in my kitchen. Those BUGS are hard to kill! It takes like a half a can of raid to get to make them stop moving!

i have lived in hawaii for four years now and had a six inch long centipede crawl out my heater vent above my stereo while i was driving down the road LOL you would have laughed if you were in the car behind me, as my butt went from the seat to the head rest, feet now off the floor only steering and using the hand brake to stop, pulled over and practically tore the dash board apart until i found and killed it with my fishing crimps (big set of pliers), i once came home in the evening to fix dinner and walk over another six incher sleeping, damn near kicked it three times, when i saw it on the floor i grabbed a knife and when i got over to it thought to my self, what the hell am i going to do with a knife? so i went for the scissors, i dont know why i didnt just grab the thing, but instead i poked it, it jumped spun two circles and locked eyes with me, it proceeded to chase me around my apartment as they definitely are not afraid of you, finally i got it with the scissors and flushed it down the toilet, three days later my girlfriend finds a little guy, about an inch and a half long (i will admit they have all been very vibrantly colored blue, purple, and orange) i have found one in the parking lot of my old place and one in the parking lot to my new place, and this morning woke up to a three inch centipede on the living room floor. no matter how many i seem to run into they still get my heart racing

Hawaii is still somewhat a wild place which locals there preserve it for the forest virginity. That’s why it’s never surprising to see such insects.

We stayed in south Kihei recently, in a really nice oceanview condo. Was woken by a centipede in the bed at 10PM! At the time, I was thinking about the probability of one being in my bed when I felt something tickle my right leg. I instantly knew it was a centipede (I was laying on top of the sheets with the fan on), and FLEW out of bed at the speed of light, then magically turned on the lights quickly-my heart raced when I saw it. Sure enough a 4″ brown centipede was moving through the folds. My wife had woken up at my girly scream and also FLEW out of the bed (which was a funny sight). Damn things move really fast and are tough, took a couple of hits with a sandal to kill it on the tile floor. If the unit had carpeting-we wouldn’t have seen it fall. We changed units after killing a large roach in the shower, but saw a 2nd centipede in the new bathroom. It had found a tiny crack in the shower drain stopper…but also died with 2 hard blows. We lost much sleep after those encounters. Everytime you get a tickle in bed, you jerk awake.
Also got a pleasant man-of-war sting on Day 1 in the first 2′ swimming! HAHAH! What a trip. Mahalo!

Nope, not poisonous but one does not want to be bitten by one. Hurts like a mother *insert bleep*. On the other hand if one is allergic to centipede venom, it can kill you. Sort of like bee stings, etc. There are also little brown scorpions here. Those can kill a cat, dog or make a small child very sick. In the five years that I have lived here, I have only seen one scorpion and two chocolate brown centipedes. The Mo’os ( lizards) do a really good job of keeping the “nasties” populations under control. The basic truth about Hawaii and the other islands is this…It ain’t the bugs one has to worry about, but the chickens. Those things are mean..and will chase you.

I had an up close & personal encounter with the Hawaiian centipede. It was very unpleasent - it happened on the 4th day of a 10 day vacation. We didnt realize it was a poisonous centipede until the next day when it was mentioned to one of the hotel employees that my leg had swollen to the size of my thigh, wa red and burning. The skin was so swollen that it ended up breaking. I had shots at the hospital to help with the swelling and pain. We flew home, probably shouldnt have but we did. We got into teh airport in Buffalo NY (took almost 24 hours to fly home due to other flight delays) upon landing a family member looked at me and drove us straight to the hospital. I was admitted right away put on interveinous pain meds, and antibiotics. I was in the hospital about 10 days and out of work for 2 1/2 months. Th hospital sd I was lucky I made it home. The skin on my leg had split so bad that it was leaking fluids. I will not be going back

im sure you have already moved and i hope for your sake you havent had to deal with anymore centipedes. well, sorry to break it to you, but centipedes crawl up. they cannot crawl down. so if you ever find one. grab a stick, put it on the stick and it will crawl to the top. put it in a bucket of bleach or drop it in a contained area and chop that f***er into a million little pieces.

It’s Saturday Oct 2, 2009 @ 2:39am. About an hour ago i was dead in my sleep. I should’ve been in a deeper sleep considering i have a cold, and i downed alotta Nyquil before i went to bed. Thankfully, for some strange reason, i felt something crawling up my left leg. I, along with my wife, 2 year old son sleep on the floor. Thank god my 2 month old has a basinette crib(we just moved into a new apt in Makaha Valley, did’nt get beds yet-it’ll soon change though). I threw my blanket off, thinkin’ it was just a roach. Turned on the light, and it was a freakin’ CENTIPEDE!!!!!!!!!!! About 6″ long. Scared the shit outta me, i killed it, but thought how lucky iwas that it did’nt bite my son or wife. I live on the 16th floor too!!!! Amazes me how it got that high………..probably hitched a ride on someone or thing. Won’t go back to sleep, i’ll keep an eye out ’til morning. Stay alert!!!!

WHERE IN MAKAHA DO YOU LIVE? I CANT EVEN IMAGINE THAT ON THE 16 FLOOR THEY WOULD BE THER ALSO. ARE YOU IN THE TOWERS. I LIVE UP IN MAUNA OLU ESTATES WHERE ALL THE BIG HOMES ARE. WE HAVE ALSO HAD CENTIPEDE PROBLEMS FOR OVER 20 YEARS. I HAVE A TWO STORY HOUSE AND WE STILL FIGHT THEM ALL THE TIME. I ALSO GOT BIT ONCE ON THE LEG AT 2AM. BOY YOU TALK ABOUT PAIN. I HAD TO GO TO THE DR. FOR SOME MEDS. MY WIFE WAS ALSO SLEEPING ON THE FLOOR 3 SUMMERS AGO BECAUSE WE WHERE WAITING FOR OUR AIRCONDITION TO BE INSTALLED. I TOLD HER DONT SLEEP THERE WITH THE TWO GLASS SLIDERS WIDE OPEN. WELL SHE DID. ABOUT 2AM I HEARD HER GET UP AND WAS CRYING. A 6 INCHER BITE HER ON THE CHEEK AND SHE WAS HURTING. HER MOUTH JUST WAS SO SWOLLEN. I COULD JUST FEEL HER PAIN. THESE BEAST ARE SO VERY FAST ALSO. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR EYE ON IT WHILE SOME ONE GETS A FLY SWATTER, THEY BEAT IT TO DEATH. THEN PUT IT IN THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL.
I HAVE DONE ALOT OF RESEARCH OVER THE 20 YEARS OF DEALING WITH THEM. YOU SEE THEY FOLLOW A SCENT FROM OTHER ONES. NOTHING WILL KIL THEM, THEY ARE FROM THE LOBSTER FAMILY AND CAN GROW TO 12 INCHES. MY NEIGHBOR STEPPED ON ONE THAT WAS CLOSE TO A FOOT LONG. I HAVE TO SPRAY A SPECIAL CHEMICALIN ALL MY DOOR WAYS AND ALL MY WINDOWS. THEN I HAVE TO SPRINKLE A SPECIAL PEST GRANUIAL WITH A SPRAIDER ALL AROUND THE HOUSE. THEY LAY EGGS. YOU CAN CUT THEM IN HALF AND THEY WILL STIL BE ALIVE FOR A FEW DAYS. THAT IS HOW POWERFUL THE ARE.
THER VEMON IS VERY, VERY, POTENT. I GOT BIT ON MY BUTT AND IT GOT HARD OVER A 30 DAY PERIOD, SO I HAD TO GO TO MY DR. AGAIN. IN TWO DAYS IT STARTED TO GET BETTER. THE CENTIPEDE WAS ONLY 3 INCHES BUT IT HAD ENOUGH VENOM THAT COILD KILL A SMALL BABBY. YOU SEE WHEN THEY ARE SMALL THEY USE ALL THERE VENOM TO MAKE A KILL. A LARGE ONE JUST USES HALF OF HIS VENOM CAUSE HE KNOWS HOW POWERFUL HE IS. THEY HAVE ALOT OF VIDIOS ON YOU YUBE WITH PICTURES OF FORIEN CENTIPEDES. BOY DO THEY LOOK SPOOKY.
WELL OK BROTHER GOD BLESS. MY PHONE NUMBER IS 695 8684 IF YOU NEED HELP WITH THESE THINGS. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

holy crap! just had an encounter with a 7in centipede myself. I am quite comfortable handling snakes and such but when it’s dark and you see one of these wiggling bastards go marching through your living room…then you know the true meaning of terror. And your absolutely right, a quarter can of raid had his ass begging for mercry. Centipede bites suck, I would have kept him alive but have two small children in the house. So to the guy who wants a live specimen, you must not get much lady action with live centipede specimens in your domain and I bet you haven’t been bit by one either. Getting bit by a centipede is almost as bad as getting bit by a wheel bug.

Just had one in my shoulder length hair! I used my hand to brush my hair back because it felt funny and the nasty thing fell right in my lap! My husband literally fell outa his chair because of my terror stricken scream. I’ve lived here six months and this is my first and hopefully last encounter. We’re out in Wahiawa near the Dole plantation. But I’m not leaving. I love it here. The Island is unbelievable and the majority of the people live aloha!
No centipede is running me off. I’m just glad that all the excitment didn’t wake up the kids and that I didn’t get bit! Oh yeah, my husband smashed it to smithereens. My hero.

Wow, those are some unpleasant stories! I lived on Kauai for five+ years in the 70’s, and saw quite a few of the little monsters, even had some in my tent when I was camping, but was lucky never to have gotten bitten by one. I did get a couple of nasty wasp stings, and about a zillion mosquito bites, but after a while they don’t get swollen, I guess you get immune to them. I would say the most disgusting things are the incredible amounts of cockroahes there, up to three inches long, and they can fly! You see them everywhere, even in the nicest restaurants. That’s a small price to pay for living in Paradise! God I miss that place! Aloha!!!

I lived on oahu for almost 20 years. We lived in Hawaii Kai up against one of the mountains out there and let me tell you, they .. are … EVERYWHERE!! I was awaken one night by a squirming feeling underneath my up near my right clavical (shoulder). So, naturally I got up and notice a slight burning sensation and immediately rip the blankets off my bed.. lo and behold, a 3-4 inch daddy was sittin there laughin at me cuz he had just bitten me. I then proceeded to grab him with a pair of pliars that I had sittin near by, grabbed my knife and cut away.. that damn thing tried to crawl away in several pieces.. go figure. Any way, I can testify to the fear and paranoia of centipedes. The time that I spent living there, I saw more centipedes than roaches. SO GLAD IM BACK ON THE MAINLAND!! I would rather deal with snakes. I just found a small centipede crawling on my front walkway today and am trying to find out if they are common here as well, no luck yet, but I HAVE ONE ALIVE IN WA STATE!!! OMFG!!

I took my dogs out on a walk tonight in Pearl City, and my pit bull saw one on the road and practically peed himself. He picked it up IN HIS MOUTH before I realized what he had done. Thankfully, he just threw it up in the air. I had to wrestle him all the rest of the way home because he wanted to go mess with it so badly. It was like 6 or 7 inches long, NO JOKE. I was afraid he’d been bitten, but luckily he seems okay.
The creepy part is the way it moves, though. Shudder! Reminds me of the snakes in Texas.
